Clowning Around


When I first started teaching in a Primary 1/2 composite class I found it difficult to maintain a low level of noise in my classroom and found myself constantly telling the children to work quietly. I needed some help with this. I had some clown heads left over from a circus party I had for my own children so I decided to build a moveable body. I put him on the wall in the classroom and the children knew that when his legs were crossed and arms folded that it was carpet time. If he had his finger on his lips it meant I wanted them to work quietly. This was very effective and gave me quality time to work with groups and it stopped the habit I had of constantly asking the children to work quietly.
